Silver jewelry from England, Scotland and Ireland is one of my passions. I love the quality, the craftsmanship, and the precise way in which they mark their jewelry. If you have jewelry from the UK a little research will tell you where the piece was made and the exact date of manufacture. In this photograph of a Scottish pin the marks from left to right are, the silver standard mark , a city mark (Edinburgh, Scotland), and the letter R, which is a date mark. The mark at the top of the pin, the initials RA, is a makers mark.
This lovely brooch is also known as a Luckenbooth. The Luckenbooth brooch is a traditional Scottish pin given to the bride on her wedding day. Pins of this type first appeared in the 16th century. The Luckenbooth is similar to the Irish claddagh in that both are a love token.
